What is Aquatic Therapy?
aquatic therapy ≠ swim lessons
Aquatic therapy uses specific handling techniques for strengthening, balance reactions, spasticity management, motor planning, and sensory integration, while taking advantage of properties of the water to optimize mobility.
In the water, gravity is virtually eliminated so children with physical disabilities are able to move more freely. The hydrostatic pressure of the water also provides the deep pressure that many children with sensory issues are seeking. The hydrostatic pressure of water also strengthens respiratory muscles by resisting inhalation and assisting exhalation.
The buoyancy of water supports weak muscles while also providing resistance to strengthen.
The viscosity of water forces more muscle fibers to be recruited (12-14x more than air!) which promotes strengthening and improved muscle activation. Lastly, in warmer water, there is increased peripheral blood flow, improved muscle flexibility, desensitization of pain pathways, and reduced spasticity or tone.
